Here's a model I keep coming back to whenever my desk decides to swallow another paperclip: the origami square bowl. It looks almost too simple — just a sheet of paper standing up into a little open box — but the first time you tuck those corners and the walls pop into place, it's quietly satisfying. No glue, no tape, just a 15 × 15 cm square and a handful of folds you've probably already met.

What I love about it is how practical it ends up being. Fold a few in different colors and suddenly you've got a whole set of tiny trays for rings, earbuds, buttons, or that mysterious pile of USB sticks. It's the kind of project that's perfect for a slow afternoon, and forgiving enough that a slightly wonky crease still gives you a bowl that works.

How to Fold a Square Origami Bowl

You’ll need one sheet of 15 × 15 cm origami paper.

[ 1 ] Fold the square in half.

[ 2 ] Fold it in half again to make a smaller square.

[ 3 ] Open one layer back out.

[ 4 ] Valley-fold along the dotted lines.

* At this point the bottom edge is the center of the paper and the top edge is the outer edge.

[ 5 ] Turn the model over.

[ 6 ] Valley-fold along the dotted lines.

[ 7 ] Open the inside and flatten it into a square.

Your model should look like this.

[ 8 ] Valley-fold along the dotted line.

[ 9 ] Repeat the same fold on the back.

[ 10 ] Fold the left side over to the right. Repeat on the back.

[ 11 ] Valley-fold along the dotted line.

[ 12 ] Repeat on the back.

[ 13 ] Valley-fold along the dotted line and make a crease.

[ 14 ] Once the crease is made, fold it back into place.

[ 15 ] While opening the flap, valley-fold along the dotted line, using the creases you made earlier.

It should look like this.

[ 16 ] Mountain-fold and valley-fold along the dotted lines.

Tuck the flap inside.

[ 17 ] Repeat on the back.

[ 18 ] Fold the left side over to the right. Repeat on the back.

[ 19 ] Same as step 16, mountain-fold and valley-fold along the dotted lines.

[ 20 ] Repeat the same fold on the back, then open it out.

And that’s it — you’re done!
